gwendolyngrace: (Thoughtful Dean)
So, I'm nearly packed - or at least, I've selected most of the clothes I'm bringing. But I'm in between on two different items.

So help me decide!

I've got to choose between two pairs of boots and two pairs of cropped trousers. (Why, yes, we are the land of people who cannot make decisions!) Descriptions and Pictures (sorry, the images are HUGE) behind the cut: )

I think the hardest thing about these is that they really are almost 6 of one, half-dozen of the other: IOW, it probably doesn't make a huge difference which ones I take. I just can't take both - I don't need both while I'm down there.

So which ones??

[Poll #1589072]
gwendolyngrace: (???)
I can't quite believe I'm considering this, but....

Does anyone think it's ridiculous to actually consider working as an Aflac insurance agent? It's commission, but it's not like I'd have to sell 1,000,000 widgets and it's certainly not like I'd be standing in a Home Depot trying to get individual marks to remodel their kitchens.

Pros:

- Money potential is great (commission structure allows residuals on all signed contracts)
- Not like healthcare, academia, or construction in that one doesn't need any special degree / knowledge to advance
- flexible schedule / hours, so I could totally arrange my schedule for auditions / rehearsals
- Variable days, not stuck at a desk, lots of field work
- plays to many strengths: presentations, talking to people, site visits, running open enrollments, etc.
- growth potential
- don't have to do it forever
- non-profit-like service (i.e., it's a socially responsible product)
- Offices are in Waltham, easy commute

Cons:

- I'm not very mainstream, dunno if I'll connect well to potential clients?
- commission structure
- will I get "addicted" to taking the calls, getting the clients?
- Will I go nuts at the scripts / sales mentality?
- Can I get emotionally invested in this enough to do it well?
- Some travel (mostly in region) and hassle of getting into town? Going to companies?

(though as the guy I interviewed with today said: You'll know if you don't like it. But don't quit before you get started.) I've also got their sample associate contract, which I'm trying to read carefully but my eyes are crossing....

I dunno.

On the other hand - if I'm going to be stuck in a job that I don't really care about passionately, it might as well be something I can make a lot of money doing, right?
gwendolyngrace: (John profile)
And a question about John.

The PSA Part: I'm working on edits to Chapter 16 (thanks as always to the all-knowing and powerful beta [livejournal.com profile] etakyma) and awaiting her comments on 17, but as I have to pack tonight and I have much, much to do in the way of other work, I fear that Trost Und Freude may not be completed posting by, um, tomorrow. I had this plan where I was even going to try to post the last chapter Thursday night from the airport, but at this point, that's not going to happen. Sixteen *might* be up tonight or tomorrow, depending on how crazy I feel.

But in order for that to happen, I must consult the collective power of the flist!

A made a comment in Chapter 16 about John's knowledge of German. You may recall that he parsed "O Tannenbaum" for poor Sam back in Chapter 2 and he'd indicated that he'd taken a tiny bit of German in school. A, I'm sure, didn't remember that (because she's good, but holy crap, that was 4 months ago!), but in 16, the topic of German language skills comes up again, and A asked, "Is this something he picked up, maybe while stationed in Germany in the war?"

Now... I kinda like this idea, that he was fudging the truth a little and that really, his knowledge of German is from coming through Ramstein or something... except that I don't think the Marines *used* any German bases for deployment or for retrieval stations during Vietnam. And I've tried searching USMC history (as well as Vietnam history) online and I'm not able to find something with that level of detail.

So, O flist (some of whom remember Vietnam a lot better than I do!), is that a reasonable place for John to have ever been? Would he have *ever* gone through a German base at any point either on his way to or back from, Southeast Asia? Somehow I think they had staging points in Guam and elsewhere in the Pacific, and of course Da Nang. But Germany?

Seems pretty far afield.

gwendolyngrace: (Embarrassed)
Last week, [livejournal.com profile] here_be_dragons asked me to answer 5 questions.
Here are my lame attempts to answer: )

Yeah, that was a whole lot of embarrassing information that most of you probably didn't want to know. LJ Comments still seem to be finding their way more often to my Junk file than not, but if you comment, I'll try to come up with questions at least as pithy as Wendy's.
