Talking with co-workers at lunch yesterday. My boss is going to London for a week (I'm so much with the jealous) and taking her whole family.

My co-worker: "What are they doing about Thanksgiving? Don't they celebrate it over there?"

No, they don't. Remember what Thanksgiving is supposedly about? Pilgrims? New world? Indians? Ring a bell?

Honestly, sometimes....

*shakes head* My god, how stupid. They'll be asking why we don't celebrate Fourth of July next...

Mind you, having said that, only the other week my father was most put out to discover other countries do not celebrate Guy Fawkes night in any way. What can you do with these people?

Do they have a 4th of July in England, Mr. T.?

Yes, Jimmy, and they have a third of July and a fifth of July.

Gotta wonder about our fellow Americans

The me-me-me- focus just continues to blow my mind. Remember when we were in 9th grade and the State of New York switch the curriculum from social studies to global studies? All I really remember from that year is the concept of "ethnocentrism." Then, I wondered that they harped on it so much. No, not so much. Doesn't seem to have made much impression on the general public at all. Sigh.

I think some Americans have trouble understanding that theirs is not the only culture in the world.

Well, what's even stupider than thinking that the Brits might celebrate Thanksgiving is thinking that because someone is in a country that DOESN'T celebrate it they are somehow prevented from having whatever they want for a Thanksgiving meal and celebrating it wherever they are. Eesh.

It's almost as bad as the interviews for the Alexander Film tour last year where the interviewers kept asking Colin Farrell what they did for Thanksgiving in Ireland! He kept looking at them like they were the stupidest people on planet...it was priceless!

Well, we celebrate Boxing Day right? Only fair that they have to celebrate Thanksgiving and the 4th of July. Would be quite cricket without it. It is a bit strange being their over US holidays and realizing that everyone is going to work as usual and there aren't any football games on though. ;)

*chortle*

When I Was living in England, a few of my classmates would wish me a Happy Thanksgiving on the appropriate day. I was always utterly charmed.
