Am I missing something?

So, as I understand it from NPR, there were some speculative rumours about Palin's youngest son not being hers, but her daughter's. So the Republican party announced today that the child can't be the girl's because...she's currently pregnant.

I love the fact that they think they can dispel a rumour that a 16/17-year-old girl was pregnant by telling us all that no, she can't have been...because she is pregnant.

Seriously? How is this a positive spin?

I'm wondering if it's a "she couldn't possibly be this pregnant if she'd just had a baby" thing. I'm too lazy to do the math, though.

No, I get the math. I'm saying that revealing she's pregnant *now* still doesn't improve the damage.

So why do they think that's so much better?

Well, remember that Palin is anti-birth-control and anti-abortion, and clearly her daughter didn't use either. The abstinence-only crowd will probably cluck their tongues and say, "You poor dear," and then they'll focus on how even though her daughter erred, she still accepted the punishment of getting knocked up made the right choice once she found out she was preggo.
