Lyle? I don't think he had any idea that he was up against someone supernatural - just that someone was pissing on his turf, as it were. Curious as to what gave you the idea that he had a clue?
For me, this was a plot that sprang forth almost completely outlined, so finding the "monster" only served to buck up what I'd wanted to do. It was all the other stuff - their family life, back before Sam knew, and all their background - that took a while and kept surprising me with what came out.
