I'm glad you liked Gina, especially - she turned out to be a lot more involved with things than I planned, but very early on, she asserted herself and made it clear what her role was going to be. I liked playing with someone who was able to mother John a little.
And as for John...poor guy. He really had an impossible job, and while I think he did his best, I also think he missed the mark as often as he hit it. So I agree--I like to see him trying to balance the two aspects, especially before Sam found out and he could be more open, more direct, about hunting. I think a lot of things changed in the Winchester family once John knew that Sam knew the truth. So that makes this balancing act even more fragile.
