I figured with how epic this story is, I needed to show a few of the victims-of-the-week and mirror the show in that way. Not all my fics do that (I've only written 3 casefiles; the rest are character studies or assorted "mundane" backstory), but I do try to keep the feel of the episodes' progressions in the longer stuff.
I knew the moment I came up with the concept - John as a mall Santa - that the case would be fun.
And, yeah, that lie is going to have consequences Dean never dreamed they'd face....
