I really wanted to bridge the information we've been given, find its internal consistency and reconcile it to the notion that despite Dean's outburst in 3.08, he had to have revealed things about Mary to Sam sometime.
And yeah, to Sam, "Mom" is a concept, an intellectual construct, whereas for Dean, she represents a 100% emotional response. So I think it's such a compelling thing to examine, how Sam would and could go about gathering the bits and pieces that Dean (and John) are willing to impart, so he can put together a patchwork picture of their mother.
