As for their ages, they're 16+ and 12 in this, which I used because I wanted Dean to have the car "legally" but before most kids his age would have access to a car. A lot of schools don't allow Sophomores to have cars on campus; hence the need to break in to the school records to "fix" his permission status. It could have worked just as well at 17 and 13, though, I agree.
Here's my obligatory backpedal: I didn't specify a time of year (except for the movie release), so it could work as well in the fall as in the spring, and an autumn date would make Dean more than halfway to 17. I wanted them both a slight bit on the young side for what they were doing, owing to their precocious natures--albeit that those natures are aimed on different trajectories. I also think that Sam at 13 would have not have been as freaked by the prospect of a sexual situation, he would have been (hormonally) more interested.
Be that as it may, yes, 16/12 or 17/13 would have worked either way. Hope it wasn't too distracting!
