As you might guess, the airlift scene at the top of IMTOD was the impetus for the fic, and that led to thinking of other reasons he wouldn't be in the Impala. So it's lovely that you picked up on how it's a touchstone for the rest of the piece.
Scenario #1 - Dad needs a break - has been in my head for a long time, too.
It's funny how the "Impala" challenge really pushed me to bring out the car a little more in all the vignettes, because I was mostly happy with the fic before, but it was missing a little oomph, and putting the Impala's absence a little more front-and-center did the trick. Also, being able to see in Sam's head (which is difficult for me) allows us some observations about Dean and his car that nevertheless include Sam's place within that world, and which Dean probably wouldn't ever express for himself.
