I've always been a picky eater and I'm still kinda picky, though my palate has broadened considerably since I was younger. (At one point, there were exactly 10 meals I would willingly eat.)
It struck me in the airport that it would be fun to play with the idea that we rarely see them eating anything other than diners, pizza, junk food, etc. I was thrilled to notice a Chinese food carton on the nightstand in a recently posted screencap (I think on raloria's journal, so I know he does eat Chinese, but I love the idea of a picky Dean flipping a switch and deciding to become "I'll eat anything" Dean - and thus was his great love affair with food born.
The fortune cookie thing comes from a more complicated place. I don't actually like fortune cookies; I break the cookie apart and pull out the fortune *without* opening the package. I was just writing along and it occurred to me that wee!Dean would find the idea of a slip of paper telling him his fate simply terrifying. But I loved the concept that John actually adopted Dean's stance on the whole thing - the father learning from the son.
Anyway. Late, must go to bed. Thanks so much for dropping by - glad you liked it!
