Project Runway Season 3!

I'm such a geek.
So, I was a total geek and last week or so went and read all the designers' bios on the website, so I was a little prepared for the premiere last night. I liked "Road to the Runway" because we got to see where some of the past designers are now, but Man, Tim Gunn is right and the CRAZIES were coming out for the show. It's interesting that this is by and large a much more mature crop - that is, the designers are more proportioned toward those who have been in the business for a while - though there are still some folks who haven't had a lot of experience.
My initial thoughts:
Malan is good, but he really needs to Get Over Himself. If he can get past his own hype, he might make it to the final 3.
Keith will do okay, but I think ultimately he will have the same issues as Emmett and won't b able to transition to women's wear soon enough.
I correctly predicted Stacey would be cut last night! Go me.
I love Robert already. He's one of my picks for final 3.
Laura is good, but will she be versatile enough? I think she'll make it about midway.
Vincent will either go all the way or he'll be out in about 3 episodes.
Jeffrey is my bet on who's sabotaging the other designers. I think he's the one who will be "asked to leave" per all the ads (listen to Tim's Blog for more on this). Then again maybe I'm responding to his image and "profiling" a little.
Alison, Angela, Bonnie, Bradley and Katherine... I don't know about these yet. Will have to wait another episode to really see what they can do. I liked Angela's leather skirt, but the use of the fake plant was strange, to say the least, and her top looked like it might expose her model's boobs at any moment!
Kayne is just a little strange, but hey, he's a little gay boy who makes pageant costumes...in Oklahoma. Are we surprised he's over the top? I think if he can be versatile enough, he'll be in the final third, but maybe not the final 3.
Michael's dress was very nice - and what an innovative use of coffee filters. But it's interesting that someone on the comments (in Tim's Take) noted that he's the one who set himself to the old Project Runway challenges, and that his dress most resembled Chloe's cascading skating outfit. Hm... cause and effect? Or coincidence?
Uli... No comment yet. Her dress didn't impress me but she's got skills.
So that's the fifteen. I wonder if they'll get their apartments refurnished by next week?
Oh, and BTW, has anyone seen the ads for next week's Queer Eye? They're making over a medievalist. They keep saying he's a squire - so is he in the SCA?
Bugger. I *hate* the American version of Queer Eye, but I might have to check this out anyway. Dammit.
Oh, in other news, I bought "Alien Nation" and am now eagerly awaiting the TV movies to follow the single season on DVD. Funnily enough, Ken Johnson on the commentary track talks quite a bit about how much fun they had with the alien names, and mentions a lot they never even got to use (e.g., Amanda Reckonwith, Minnie Series, etc.).
It's a bit like making up Drag Queen names, only different! Were I even geekier, it's the sort of thing that screams for a meme.
But watching the series again is interesting. I mean, Johnson said right up front that he only really adopted the police procedural format to hold together episodes that were really about personal drama. Which is good, because the procedural part really *doesn't* work - especially now that there are so many shows that delve more meticulously into procedure and protocol.* But I can see, retrospectively, why it got cancelled. Aside from the network running scared (I mean, really, Male Pregnancy!?), really, a *lot* happened to Sikes and Francisco during that single season. How many times have we looked at those "life stress" exams where you're supposed to evaluate how much stress you have by what's happened in the last year? Major events are things like changing jobs, moving, marriage or divorce, new baby, etc.?
Well, in the single season, it got almost soap-opera the way things happened to them.
I'm also disappointed to learn that the Tenctonese language in the opening song is just English pronounced backwards (and that it took a few episodes for a real linguist to work on the language for them). It had so much more potential.
Anyway. Ordinarily it's not that I'm so obsessed with TV, but AjesBlue is in Montreal and I've been sewing, which for me means watching movies (or TV shows on DVD), and... well, summer seasons and all that.
*Speaking of new police dramas, anyone out there watching The Closer? Because Monday's episode? Funniest hour of drama I've seen in a long, long time. I was actually worried about disturbing my landlord because I was laughing so hard.
Erm. Yeah. TV is my life. Why do you ask?

Date: 2006-07-13 07:20 pm (UTC)I LOVE the Closer, I Tivo it and then burn the episodes to DVD so I can go back and watch them whenever I want. I thought Monday's episode was the best ;) It really had so many interesting eliments to it...lost of humor :) Was it me or did you hear a sound affect "Swoosh" when she raised her arm and pointed to her office at Flynn and Provens?? I swear I heard it!!!
I watch TV a lot too, I love stories, when I watch tv shows and movies I tend to break them down to literary points, sometimes I can predict what the writer is going to do or write next and sometimes they surprise me. One of my favorites is Deadwood on HBO...that show is fantastic, it has such wonderful literary themes and the vernacular is mesmerizing.
