Until we hear Snape's side of the story on this - which may or may not happen - who knows. Snape's not dense - so there would have been a good reason for him to want to break school rules and enter a mysterious tunnel all alone. Surely he would have guessed it was a trap? And what on earth did Sirius use as bait...?
There could also still be surprises yet - maybe Lupin and Snape go back further than Hogwarts - both being Half bloods? *clutches at straws*
