Yup! That's it exactly. I had originally thought Dean glimpsed what he thought was blood on John's scalp, to reinforce the assumption, but in the end I decided it was better if that's what he (or Bobby) just decided was wrong, and his hurried consultation with Bobby didn't help either of them to challenge that conclusion. (I love that conversation in my head, btw. Dr. Bobby for the win!)
And yeah...it's the kind of thing that probably happened WAY too often - way more often than many of us want to think - but it's one of the more tragic parts of their lives.
