I think they both love and respect each other so deeply that there are times they both wish to "turn back the clock" and give each other the things they never had. We've seen Dean say similar things (like in "Something Wicked") so I wanted to show it from Sam's perspective too, give him a chance to acknowledge what Dean gave up for him.
