He couldn’t hear the rumble of the engine the way he could when Dad parked right in front of a motel room. It took a lot of concentration to listen for the tiny click of the key in the lock and the creak of the door opening. He fell asleep long before early morning, when his father finally rolled in. that's a sad image. Bad John there.

John often thought the reason they got along so well was that they put up with each other’s moods. Or perhaps it was because they didn’t get permanently offended by each other’s moods.
that made me smile and the Bobby backstory that John desn't know makes them linked, kinda, i like the way you have Bobby react to 'batchelor'

John was all too aware that the wrong kind of youthful indiscretion could spell Youth Services knocking on their door.

John suspected that Dean and Sammy never tested Bobby the way they tested him, either.
I like this too and then the pager, a way for Dean to contact John, not so bad John:)

Liked John and the teacher, Sammy and the curtain, Dean feeling trusted - you pack in a lot of detail

What a lovely ending!
