Yeah, that's exactly it - in the moment, living for NOW in a way that Sam never has been able to do well. That's what being 4 is all about. I think it's also more like Dean to let go, even when there's a case to be addressed. He is, after all, the one who wants to take the night off and party even after they've put together a gameplan (Benders, Provenance, etc.) and the one who gets distracted by scenery (Hookman, Hollywood Babylon, etc.), while still keeping one tiny part of his brain trained on any sign of what they're looking for.
I always got the sense from the things they say in the show that Sam was never quite as naturally graceful as Dean, so, yeah, I thought that presenting him with shin-high furniture would be fun. Ginormous Sasquatch that he is!
