I find that authors tend either to be unrelenting bashers, or they go a little off the deep end and smoke the bad crack.
Absolutely. I know some readers might think my view of John is on the rose-coloured side but, for the most part, those who IMO seem to really get John, also get what I'm going for in my stories (which is sometimes unapologetic meta). I like to put him (and therefore his boys) in positions where his warmer personality comes out but I don't think I cross the line of believability, not when what we've actually seen him do or say is there to back me up. Hell, I *love* bad-ass John and even asshole John. Because these are just aspects of the man, not his entire make-up.
I too started as a Dean-girl and am still very much one. But John just fascinates and moves me differently and, maybe because his situation parallels a true ass from my RL (the father of my very Dean-like hubby), I have a lot more sympathy and patience for him than others do. Frankly I think he did better by his boys than my widower f-i-l did for his kids so I tend to admire John in ways others don't.
I definitely will read your TuF epic but have decided that it's one I'm going to print out, due to its sheer size, rather than scald my eyeballs with it because I have a strong feeling, once I immerse myself in it, I'll read it in as close to one fell swoop as possible *g*. Something I'm very much looking forward to :).
