Well, yeah! And if you think about it, even in Bugs, you get the sense that Sam's disappointment in John is borne partially from a fear that John was disappointed in him. You don't care about a man's opinion of you as much as Sam obviously does if you don't also love that man a whole helluva lot.

And despite his mistakes, I think John earned that love. It's not automatic - it's deserved.
